SERVICES & PROCEDURES

Bone Density

This is a noninvasive procedure used to determine the amount of bone loss by measuring bone mineral density.

A DXA scan is the current standard for measuring bone mineral density.

This scan can assist in diagnosing osteoporosis and monitor its treatment.

This procedure usually takes 10 to 15 minutes to complete
Who should have this scan
  • Post-menopausal women who are not taking estrogen
  • Post-menopausal women who are thin
  • Patients with type 1 diabetes, liver disease or kidney disease
  • Patients using medications that can cause bone loss, such as corticosteroids or anti-seizure medication
  • Patients with a thyroid or parathyroid condition
  • Patients who have had nontraumatic fractures
  • Patients already diagnosed with osteoporosis

The results of the test are sent to your doctor so you can be given advice or treatment as to how to help keep your bones strong to prevent fractures.
